ABOUT: The Lagerfljótsormurinn is an Icelandic folktale.

Essentially the Icelandic analogue of the Loch Ness monster, this lake-dwelling serpent lives in its namesake, lake Lagerfljót. Its name literally translates to “Lagerfljót worm”, but descriptions of it vary from worm, to serpent, to dragon.

Its origin story can be found in a folktale by Jón Árnason, published in 1862. A girl was given a golden ring by her mother, and was instructed to place it under a heath worm — a type of slug — in order to gain riches. However, the slug grew monstrous, so it was tossed into the lake, where it continued to grow.

Whether it is monstrous or benign, none can say.
